The (Inter)Stitch

How can one preserve a historic building while designing for resiliency and flexible future use?

Our building poetically and functionally “glues” together the past and future through thick, contrasting service zones. One zone stitches together the old and new building footprints with a spine of solid service cores while the other works in parallel to affix the old façade to the new skin with an open service void. Together, the new building challenges initial expectations of dark structural brick buildings by creating a contrasting light and airy interior and transforming the existing structural façade into a screen. The interior is able to be redesigned for a variety of programs the building could host in the future.
