Park as an Urban Theatre

How can performing arts connect people along a long, linear park?

Through a critical examination of the Southwest Corridor Park in Boston, a linear park that stretches across four distinct neighborhoods, I proposed a major redevelopment of one site, Jackson Square, to become a cultural arts hub paired with the creation of a performing arts network along the park. The goal of this project was to use nodes for performing arts to connect the fragmented experience across the neighborhoods and encourage community engagement along the park.

Architecture, Infrastructure, and the City (Urbanism Studio) with Brian Gregory, Fall 2020

I first made initial site observations and maps of neighborhoods along the Southwest Corridor. A taxonomy drawn of the journey along the corridor compared the experience to music.

Jackson Square was chosen as my main intervention site due to its existing main street district and its local arts scene. Three other sites along the Corridor were identified as part of the proposed urban arts network. Beat Boxes were designed to sit on these network sites to facilitate small performing arts gatherings.
